Bolster 本是个名词，指垫在普通枕头下面的“垫枕、靠枕”，也作“bolster pillow”。这种枕头一般长而厚，用来支撑背或者胳膊，或者仅仅作为一种装饰品使用。
用在机械和建筑领域时， bolster 则分别表示“垫木、软垫、车架承梁”和“托木、雀替”。
