Balk 是美式英语，在英式英语中作 baulk ，源自古北欧语 balkr （田脊、田埂），原指农田中没犁过的条状区域，即两条犁沟之间的田脊或分割两块农田的田埂。
由于犁过的农田都是平整的，而田脊或田埂高高突出在农田之上，所以 balk 进而引申出“障碍、阻碍、挫折”或建筑上的“梁木、横梁”等含义，比如：
- 这对他们来说是一个挫折。
