Yardstick 是一个复合词，由 yard （码）+ stick （棍、棒、杆）构成。其中 yard 除了在英式英语中表示“院子、庭院”或者在美式英语中表示“住宅旁边的花园、果园、菜园等”外，还是常用的英制长度单位“码”，1码等于3英尺或者说0.9144米。
如此看来， yardstick 的字面意思即一码长的棒杆。而标准长度的棒杆往往被人用作测量长度的工具，所以 yardstick 的意思也就是“码尺”。码尺多为直尺，其尺上通常刻有英寸刻度。
