“福音”本是一个基督教的术语，指耶稣的言论及其门徒们传播的教义。在拉丁文中，福音叫做 euangelium 。其中， eu 是“好”的意思，如 eugenics （优生学）、 eulogize （赞美）、 euphemism （委婉的词语）；angelium 是“消息”的意思，天使 angel 与其同源。
基督教传入英国后，英国人将拉丁文 euangelium 意译为古英语单词 godspell ，其中， god 等于 good （好）， spell 表示消息、信息。后来， godspell 的拼写逐渐演变成了现代英语中的 gospel 。
