Mitigate 源自拉丁语 mitigare (软化、使变嫩、使成熟、使柔和、驯化),主要用于正式表达“减轻、缓和”某事,如平息怒气可以说“mitigate anger”,减轻某人的失望情绪可以说“mitigate one's disappointment”。在法律领域,人们常用 mitigating circumstances 表示“可使罪名减轻的情节”。
另外值得注意的是, mitigate 容易与 militate 混淆,但后者主要接 against 构成动词短语 militate against sth 表示“防止、阻碍某事的发生或存在”。
