在古代欧洲的酒吧或其他零售酒水的地方，卖酒的小贩会批发采购一桶一桶的啤酒或其他酒类，然后打开酒桶装上龙头，一杯一杯地卖给喝酒的人。打开酒桶的工具在法语中叫broche，后来演变为英语单词Broach（钻头、凿子）。而表示“打开酒桶”的动词brochier则辗转演变成英语中的broker，其字面意思就是“打开酒桶的人”，原本用来表示零售酒水的小贩，后来泛指各种经销商。
