dormant源自拉丁语dormire（睡），最初仅用于表达“睡着的”，直到17世纪才开始用于形容“休眠的、蛰伏的”，比如熊在冬季冬眠，就可以说“bears are dormant during the winter”。到了18世纪60年代，dormant开始用于形容休眠中的火山，比如“a dormant volcano”。
