面对纠纷时，很多人或许都在无意间扮演或充当过一个角色——“和事老”。
“和事老”，也写作“和事佬”，字面意思是“调停争端的人（mediator, someone who tries to bring peace）”。“和事”指“平息事件或争端、调节纷争（mediate, make peace）”，“佬”表示“成年男子（guy, fellow）”。
“和事老”通常带有贬义，特指不讲原则、不问是非而一味劝双方和解的人（person who is more concerned with stopping the bickering than settling the issue）。
