近几年在春晚舞台上，全国观众都被魔术大师刘谦的近景魔术（close-up magic）表演惊艳。魔术本身就是一种欺骗的艺术，所以为了实现效果需要一些“假”观众，这些观众相当于是魔术师的助手，由于他们假装自己什么都不知道，所以就贬义地称之为“托儿”了。
基于上面这个理解，我们可以直接将魔术托儿这种“术托”解释为：The magician’s secret partner/assistance who pretends to be a spectator.
英语里其实还有更地道简洁的表达，常用这几个词表示这种托：confederate、stooge 或者plant。
来看一下他们的英文解释：
- confederate：audience member planted to act in a cooperative manner
- stooge：A stooge is magician's confederate who pretends to be a spectator. A stooge may fake amazement, deny his previous personal contact with the magician, behave in a certain way, say certain things, lie about something
- plant：The stooge or assistance who was placed in the audience was called a plant. When the particular act came on stage, at some point a volunteer was called for, and the plant responded quickly before someone else in the audience could. Chosen, the plant came onto the stage and joined the act of prearranged business.
据此，“刘谦擅长近景法术和术托众多而闻名”就可以说成：
- Louis is known for his mastery of close-up magic and frequent use of stooges/confederates/plants.
