英语中约有十来个以avi-起头的词，均源自意为“鸟”的拉丁词avis, aviation即是其中的一个，表示“航空”或“飞行”。该词是一个无名的法国人所杜撰，首次见诸著名法国小说家凡尔纳所著的一本科幻小说的1887年版英译本中。
