“啃老族”主要指主动放弃就业机会，赋闲在家，衣食住行全靠父母的青年人。网上查到的两种译法为NEET和boomerang child，仔细分析，都有问题。
根据《柯林斯词典》，NEET（或Neet）为英式英语，是not in employment, education, or training的缩写。这个译法的问题首先是知道NEET为何义的人很少，美国人不用说，即使英国人也可能不知道这个被《柯林斯词典》标注为“Rarely used”的词。
再从词意上看，满足not in employment, education, or training的人不一定就和父母住在一起，这样“啃老族”一个主要特征就缺失了。另外仅从字面定义来说，没有工作，没有接受教育或培训的人也不一定没有经济收入，不一定要依靠父母。
再看boomerang child，根据《韦氏词典》，这个表述的意思为a young adult who returns to live at his or her family home especially for financial reasons。这个解释满足了和父母居住的要求，但boomerang child不一定没有工作，虽然有经济问题，但不一定“衣食住行全靠父母”。
“啃老”这种行为可以译为sponge off of his/her parents。根据《韦氏词典》，此时sponge对应的解释为: to get something from or live on another by imposing on hospitality or good nature，其中live on another by imposing on hospitality or good nature，即利用某人的好客或善良而依靠其生活，符合“啃老”的定义。
根据《美国传统词典》，sponge off的意思包括To live by relying on the generosity of someone else，给出的例句为：
He sponged off his parents for years because they never insisted that he get a job.
这句话可译为“他当了很多年‘啃老族’，因为他父母从不要求他找工作。”
如果指“啃老族”这类人群的话，不能直接用parents sponger，因为英文没有这个表达。此时，如果不用young people who sponge off their parents的话，“啃老族”还可译为unemployed no-income young people who live with their parents，虽然繁琐些，但翻译的更为具体、全面。
